                                                           Hello parents and Hedke students!

I am finally posting for the 2014 school year. I want to fill you in on all the activities your student's have been working on  this first quarter.

Unit one:   Soccer   we worked on  skills and many reinforcement games.  Line soccer is still one of their favorite maximum participation games.

Unit two:  Football   we worked on throwing, catching, and kicking,  The hotdog bowl for my 3-5 graders is  a blast. (  Who Let the Dogs Out? )

Unit three:  Basketball  we have just started with skills and will work toward games soon.

Everyday activities:    Aerobic activity and fitness,  Strength and flexibility stretches,    discussion on  best efforts, cooperation, responsibility, respect for others, and reminding them the benefits of physical activity.

Students have really enjoyed the Garden Heroes purchased this year.  Many students have told me about many new healthy fruits and vegetables they have tried,  Keep up the good work.

The Hedke fitness testing will take place throughout the year.  The students will pre-test and post-test each fitness test.  The tests include: mile run, curl-ups, shuttle run, push-ups/ pull-ups, v-sit reach.  The 3-5 graders participate in these tests.  The k-2 students will practice these tests for the future.

Thanks for checking in with the Physical Education program.

Did they they like the rock wall?  Let me know.

    Happy Thanksgiving!     Go Lions!

Year end Report

                                    Final Notes for the Year.

As I write this I realize I will only see your child four more times this year.  I want to let you know that the student body at Hedke has shown growth not only in skills, but in their knowledge about the benefits of physical activity.

The Hedke students cooperate and show compassion for others, and that always makes for a productive class.  I hope they continue to work on fitness throughout  the summer, and remember exercise is medicine.

Some highlights that have gone on this year beside our regular lessons are:

Running club in the morning.  ( weather was not very cooperative, but Mr. Porecca and staff were, letting us have the hallways, way to go team Hedke )

A.C.E.S.   May 7  It was great fun !   Just Ask !

Activity Nights  3rd, 4th, and 5th. It was great fun!  Just Ask!

Student Teacher Sarah Bartok from the Concordia University Ann Arbor.  She did an excellent job the three days she was with us.

Hedke Fitness Awards       Thanks to Mrs. McClelland for our new design.

                 MARCH INTO SPRING!

The classes have just completed their volleyball unit.

They have also had a short tennis unit.

The skills emphasized were:
- forehand
-gallop
-set
-bump
-serve

The strengthening continues through newly introduced stretches,  such as quad stretch, lying back stretch, modified push-ups, abdominal crunches, and lower back reach leg lifts.

Fitness has moved up to six minutes of sustain exercise, with lots of reinforcement games.  The snowball fight was fun!

Our discussion on the Benefits of Physical Education has continued.  We reviewed the heart function.  New discussions about lung function, and temperature and activity.  One student commented on the fact that this is not science class.  He is still running I think.

Have a great March!

Family Winter Break Contest, and Class Updates.

The students have been having a great time in their Physical Education classes.  The upper elementary just finished basketball.  I like to introduce this sport now because the students who show an interest can look into signing up in leagues, and park and recreation programs around town.  The games were exciting and every week the percentage of points scored increased, in all grades.

We also continued with our aerobic fitness, and flexibility exercises each period.  All grades are moving with an objective of five continuous minuets.

The five basic food groups were covered with lots of discussion and examples of foods.  Ask them what they want for dinner,  and they will let you know if it is a balanced meal.

January will bring a brief tennis lesson, and then moving into volleyball.  We love the volleyball constructive competitive tournament.

Winners of the  " What I'm Thankful for Contest "  were

LYDIA GRAY
KARSON  ROBINETTE

They did an excellent job and will receive a new can of tennis balls and a gift card.

Thankful for..........?

Hello and happy November.  I want to update  parents and friends on the Physical Education classes, and fitness activities.

All the grades have been working hard on fitness.  They are able to sustain  exercise at a moderately high intensity for five minutes.  They are working their time up each month so the re-take of the mile run/walk will be a breeze.

Ask about snack-n-go, face the run, or Mrs. Herman as the lead runner.  Fun stuff.

All third, fourth, and fifth graders have taken the mile run, and curl-up test.  These are two of the five tests your student will be assessed on, and then hopefully earn a Hedke Fitness Award at the end of the year.  I have been thrilled with the positive comments coming from students after they realize they have improved from last year.  Great job Bulldogs!!

The next fitness test will be v-sit reach.  How flexible are you?

Skills and drills
The kindergarten, first, and second have completed leap, and have been playing games to perfect their horizontal jump.  Rabbits in the garden was a fun game, if you made it in the garden!

The upper elementary have been working on ball handling: rolled, bounced, or thrown.

Basketball is the next unit of emphasis.  I hope they enjoy learning this very difficult, but fun sport.

Finally
Thankful for.....  Contest.

Any student that turns in a written statement listing the things they are thankful for  that keeps them, and their family active, and healthy will be entered in a drawing for a sports prize.  Make it sound great!
Due November 27th

Have a great Thanksgiving! I'll be cheering for the Lions at Ford field.  Go Lions!!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2013-2014

Hello and welcome back to the Physical Education blog.  I will be keeping in touch periodically to let you know the skills, and tests that the children will be working on throughout each marking period.  I hope that will give everyone a heads up on what to practice with their children.

We have finished soccer skills, drills, and games.  We also ran/walked the mile at the end of September.  The motor skills that have been worked on are leap, walking at various speeds, and introduction to hop, jump, skip, and gallop. We have also worked on overhead throw and catch.

Aerobic fitness has been a goal for us this year.  Please help your child keep the pace with fitness and skills by trying these ideas.

Walk for 30 min., or more.

Jog a mile.

Ride your bike.

Play catch.

Leap over low objects on a run around the yard.

Pass a soccer ball to each other.( foot dribble, instep kick)

Anyway you move, you will improve.

Next Hedke Fitness test for 3-5 graders is curl-ups for 1 min.

Have fun!

Coach Herman
